Several Oklahoma communities learned this week that they will be losing their local Department of Public Safety Driver's License testing sites.
Elk City is one of those communities. Elk City has only had a part time testing site for the last several years, housed at the National Guard Armory. A full-time testing site is maintained at the Oklahoma Highway Patrol headquarters in Clinton.
The Oklahoma National Guard has notified DPS that all drivers license testing sites using National Guard facilities were to be relocated by Tuesday.
For most outlying communities, that means simply shutting down their part-time sites, forcing citizens to drive to the nearest testing site, usually an OHP troop headquarters, to take their driving tests.
Elk City has, in the past, utilized the Elk City Police Department's court room for testing, but scheduling conflicts caused DPS to move the site to the armory.
Officials at Troop H in Clinton said it is not known yet whether DPS will try to work with Elk City to see about the possibility of reopening a site there. One source has indicated that DPS intends to close the site permanently in a move by the State to save money.
